SARS-CoV-2 is an enveloped, non-segmented, positive sense RNA virus, belonging to Betacoronavirus. Cellular entry of coronaviruses depends on the binding of the spike (S) protein to a specific cellular receptor and subsequent S protein priming by cellular proteases. Studies have shown that ACE2 is the receptor of SARS-CoV-2 and serine protease TMPRSS2 is for S protein priming. Based on these findings, scientists are focusing on the study of the two targets for drug development and trying to develop drugs by interrupting the process.
